Money for Old Road?

James May Scalextric Bastion

Scalextric Bastion, James May

Following the triumph of his fantastic mega Scalextric track build for the slot car episode of his BBC Toy Stories series last year, James May has returned to the Brooklands circuit in support of their latest fundraising scheme.

To secure the future of its great collection of motoring history, the Brooklands Museum hopes to raise in excess of £250,000 by selling 2,000 single sqaure yard sections of its legendary track.

That’s at least £125 per square yard. A hefty price for some old tarmac, which represents a similar level of value-for-money as the driveway my dad had done by some strange-hatted men in a horse wagon back in the 80s.

Still, if it means some overly rich, overly wined motorsport enthusiasts are going to basically give away sums of money that us humble slot car fans can only dream of to fund the upkeep of such a great motoring museum, then who can argue?
